Fibroma

Fibroma are small, benign, flesh-colored bumps commonly found on the face. When located on or near the nose, they are often referred to as fibrous papules of the nose. Their texture and composition can vary:

  • Some contain numerous blood vessels (angiofibroma)

  • Some are soft with a similar composition to skin

  • Others incorporate connective tissue and feel firmer

Although completely harmless, some individuals choose to have them removed for aesthetic reasons. They are not strongly linked to lifestyle factors, though sun exposure is sometimes suggested as a contributing factor.

How laser treatment works

We use an Erbium ablative laser to vaporise the fibroma layer by layer, carefully flattening the bump until it blends smoothly with the surrounding skin.

Many fibroma disappear after just one treatment, but some may require a second session, especially if they are larger, more vascular (contain more blood vessels), or particularly tough.

Surface bleeding can occasionally reduce the laser’s effectiveness. In such cases, we may pause treatment and schedule a follow-up session to complete removal.

What to expect during treatment

  • Comfort: Treatment involves mild discomfort, but it is generally well tolerated.

  • Eye Safety: For facial treatments, we completely cover your eyes for protection.

What to expect after treatment

  • The treated area will scab over.

  • There may be redness and mild swelling.

  • The area may feel slightly sensitive for about a week.

  • Once the scab falls off, underlying tissue may be slightly pink. The healing area may undergo some degree of hyperpigmentation in the short to medium term meaning the healing attachment point may be a bit darker than surrounding skin. This normally resolves in 1 to 6 months. In the longer term, a small degree of hypopigmentation may be seen on close inspection. The healed attachment area may be slightly lighter than surrounding skin

This procedure does involve some downtime, but healing is fast, and most people return to normal activities quickly.

Fibroma Removal FAQ

Fibroma normally respond in 1 to 2 treatments. We typically charge £150 per fibroma.

We usually patch test before laser treatments, but in the case of small, focal lesions like fibromas, a partial treatment would be counterproductive. For this reason, we would normally proceed directly to full treatment during your appointment if the lesion is suitable and you’re happy to go ahead.

We use an Erbium:YAG ablative laser, which precisely vaporises the fibroma while minimising heat damage to surrounding tissue. This approach reduces the risk of scarring and supports faster healing compared to methods that generate more residual heat. It also allows for accurate cosmetic results with minimal disruption to nearby skin.

The treated fibroma is unlikely to return. However, if you’re prone to developing fibromas, new ones may appear in other areas over time. We can assess and treat these if and when they arise.

There is some discomfort during the procedure, often described as a hot, pinging sensation, similar to being snapped with an elastic band. Areas like the face can feel more sensitive, but treatment is very quick and generally well tolerated. Afterward, you may experience a mild sunburn-like feeling for the rest of the day and some minor sensitivity for about a week.

Recovery typically takes between 1 and 3 weeks. The healing process usually follows these stages:

  • The treated area will be red and may be slightly swollen.

  • Some light bleeding from the site is possible immediately after treatment.

  • A dry scab will form and remain in place for 1 to 2 weeks. It is important not to pick at the scab, as this increases the risk of scarring or delayed healing.

  • Once the scab falls away, the skin may look pink or slightly darker than usual. Temporary darkening of the skin (hyperpigmentation) is common and may take a few months to fade.

Some textural changes (scarring) may occur with any procedure that removes unwanted tissue. The attachment point of the removed fibroma needs to heal by granulation and may have a slightly different texture to the surrounding skin. Some degree of hypopigmentation may also persist long term.

However, Erbium ablative laser removal tends to cause far less scarring than other approaches. Any minor textural changes are almost always less noticeable than the original lesion. We have seen many removals heal with virtually flawless results.

We assess every lesion before treatment. If there’s any doubt about the diagnosis or if the lesion has features that look unusual, we may advise you to seek a medical opinion before proceeding. Your safety comes first, and we won’t treat anything that raises concern without appropriate referral.

No. While skin tags (acrochordons) and fibromas are both benign skin growths, they differ in both structure and treatment.

Skin tags are typically pedunculated, meaning they hang from the skin on a narrow stalk, often with soft, lobe-like structures. We treat these using a long-pulse Nd:YAG laser, which denatures the tissue without breaking the surface of the skin.

Fibromas, on the other hand, are usually firmer, with a broader base and deeper attachment. These require Erbium:YAG laser ablation to precisely remove the entire lesion while minimising heat spread and scarring. The technique, healing time, and aftercare are different for each.

We recommend avoiding makeup over the treated area until the scab has come away and the skin is fully healed. This helps prevent irritation, infection, or delayed healing. Once the skin is intact and no longer sensitive, makeup can be applied as normal.

Yes. We can usually treat multiple fibromas in a single session, depending on their number and location. However, unlike some of our other treatments, we do not offer discounted pricing for multiple fibromas, as each one requires the same level of precision and care. The typical fee is £150 per fibroma.
