Fibroma

Fibroma are small, benign, flesh-colored bumps commonly found on the face. When located on or near the nose, they are often referred to as fibrous papules of the nose. Their texture and composition can vary:

• Some contain numerous blood vessels (angiofibroma)

• Some are soft with a similar composition to skin

• Others incorporate connective tissue and feel firmer

Although completely harmless, some individuals choose to have them removed for aesthetic reasons. They are not strongly linked to lifestyle factors, though sun exposure is sometimes suggested as a contributing factor.

How laser treatment works

We use an Erbium ablative laser to vaporise the fibroma layer by layer, carefully flattening the bump until it blends smoothly with the surrounding skin.

Many fibroma disappear after just one treatment, but some may require a second session—especially if they are larger, more vascular (contain more blood vessels), or particularly tough.

Surface bleeding can occasionally reduce the laser’s effectiveness. In such cases, we may pause treatment and schedule a follow-up session to complete removal.

What to expect during treatment

• Comfort: Treatment involves mild discomfort, but it is generally well tolerated.

• Eye Safety: For facial treatments, we completely cover your eyes for protection.

What to expect after treatment

• The treated area will scab over.

• There may be redness and mild swelling.

• The area may feel slightly sensitive for about a week.

• Once the scab falls off, underlying tissue may be slightly pink. The healing area may undergo some degree of hyperpigmentation in the short to medium term meaning the healing attachment point may be a bit darker than surrounding skin. This normally resolves in 1 to 6 months. In the longer term, a small degree of hypopigmentation may be seen on close inspection. The healed attachment area may be slightly lighter than surrounding skin

This procedure does involve some downtime, but healing is fast, and most people return to normal activities quickly.

How long will my fibroma removal take and how much will it cost?

Fibroma normally respond in 1 to 2 treatments. Please see Prices for a guide to costs.

Why is the Highland Laser Clinic approach better than other methods?

We use Erbium:YAG ablative laser, which precisely vaporises the fibroma while minimising heat damage. This reduces the risk of scarring and promotes a faster recovery compared to other ablative lasers.

Will my fibroma come back again?

Probably not. If you are prone to developing fibroma, new ones may appear in different areas over time, but the treated fibroma is unlikely to return.

Does it hurt?

There is some discomfort during the procedure, described as a hot, pinging sensation, similar to being snapped with an elastic band. After treatment, you may feel a mild sunburn-like sensation for the rest of the day and some minor sensitivity for about a week.

How long does it take to heal after treatment?

Recovery generally takes 1 to 3 weeks:

• The treated area will be red and may be slightly swollen.

• A scab will form and remain for 1 to 2 weeks.

• Once the scab falls off, the area may appear slightly pink. Temporary darkening of the skin (hyperpigmentation) is common and may last a few months. In the longer term, a slight lightening of the skin (hypopigmentation) may be noticeable upon close inspection.

• Some minor textural changes may occur due to the healing process, but this will improve over time and will be far less noticeable than the original fibroma.

Pre Treatment Advice

4 weeks before treatment

•  Avoid fake tan/self-tanning products on or near the treatment area.

On the day of treatment

•  Wash the area thoroughly.

•  Avoid swimming in chlorinated water beforehand.

•  Ensure you are well-hydrated and have eaten. Avoid alcohol, hangovers, and working a night shift before treatment.

•  If suitable, you may take paracetamol an hour before treatment for discomfort. Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, and NSAIDs as these can increase bleeding.

•  Do not apply any product to the treatment area, including makeup.

Post Treatment Advice

First 48 hours

•  Aloe vera gel will be applied immediately post-treatment.

• Expect redness, swelling, and scabbing.

• Avoid touching, scratching, or picking at the area to prevent scarring.

•  Avoid strenuous activity (e.g. gym, sports).

•  Wash gently with mild soap and water, pat dry, and apply a thin layer of Savlon or Vaseline.

•  Avoid heat exposure (hot baths, saunas, steam rooms, or direct hot showers).

First Week

• No swimming in chlorinated water

•  Mild tenderness may persist.

•  The treated area will darken and form a scab, which should flake off in 1 to 2 weeks

1 - 2 weeks post treatment

•  If the scab still remains after 2 weeks, we recommend you soak in a hot bath to soften and gently remove

•  Avoid sun exposure and apply SPF 50+ once the area starts healing.

In the 4 weeks post treatment
